Here's few pics of my 1st hickory selfbow. It was a learning experience!
This stave was given to me by Mike Churney. The stave has a snaky lower limb and gentle undulations in the back. There is a bit of propeller and the handle is canted due to the snakiness of the wood. I got her tillered and have been shooting her regular like... man it shoots nice.

The other day as I was applying some beaver grease - shut up- I noticed some small cracks running across the belly... right where the snaky section of limb is located. NOT GOOD! I'm depressed now ~(8o( and this bow seems destined to reside above a fireplace in my bro's new home.

Hickory makes a surprizingly smooth shooting bow!

The first shots!
The picture is distorted to fit the page requirements... I dont look like a 6'5" 275 lb surfer here now do I?
This is the lower limb of the hickory bow pictured above
After shooting a hundred or so arrows I noticed some chrysalling or cracks right where the grain curves..

Looks like I'll have to do some surgery....
This sure is fun! I was a little disappointed at first sign of the cracks, but now I look forward to figuring out a way to make her better!!
2 Hickory staves
My 1st hickory bow is one the right. A new one of mockernut on the left is roughed out and about 85% completed.

Cant wait to tiller her up! Geez, it's gettin tough to decide which bow to fiddle with!
Midsection of bow
You can see a bit of the twist of the handle. It is not in line with the limbs. You notice that on the top photo of the bow being shot, it looks as though the bow is bending more in one spot on the lower limb.

This is where the bow's belly shows the cracks. When viewed from the side, the drawn bow looks to be in good tiller. At least to this novice anyway...

If I had to do it all over again I'd have made the bow a little lower in weight. The limbs just arent wide enuff to provide the amount of draw weight I wanted..The stave was 2" wide when I started and would've been better served for a #40 bow IMHO

Also I should have just made the bow for a lefty, leaving the snaky limb on top and lessening the tension on it.

Here's this years 8pt
I ended up taking the smallest buck I had called in this year! I got this young fella just 20 minutes before the early season ended! MaryJo gave me the orders to "Bring home some deer meat will ya?". I usually pass on this size deer looking for one a bit older.

I wanted to do something different with an antler mount.
The Osage bow has an imperfection in it that causes me worry, so I decided to put it away. I figure this mount would show just how beautiful and functional selfbows really are!!
What do you think?? Wanna bet I have shot it since and will continue to do so?? ~(8o)
A closer look at the mount
If it would have been me drawing on the cave walls, it could've led to mass confusion!

I certainly need to "brush up" on cave drawings eh?
